It's not a particularly novel idea - we need only to look at comics to recognize the trope - but Eleven was both terribly vulnerable and incredibly powerful, and the complexity of her character quickly launched her to fan favorite status. But Eleven also stands out in Season 1 because she exists simultaneously as a victim of scientific experimentation and the show's obvious hero. What made Eleven a powerful character in Season 1 wasn't just that she literally had telekinetic powers, but her central role in the show's overall narrative, a subversion of the gender tropes of the '80s films from which the series draws its inspiration. What's Next for Stranger Things in Season 3? This retroactively removed some of the danger of the climactic final battle while also revealing the worst possible scenario for Eleven: the writers clearly didn't know what to do with her. But Season 2 revealed by Episode 2 that she was living with Hopper ( David Harbour) in the year-long gap between seasons, and that it took her approximately one whole minute to escape the Upside Down after defeating the Demogorgon in Season 1. If the character had spent a considerable amount of time trapped in the Upside Down in Season 2, overlooking her separation from the main cast would have been simple as it would have opened up the possibility to learn more about the mythology of the show. It's quite simple really: Eleven's story, which found her sidelined in a slow-moving plot for much of the show's satisfying sophomore season, felt at times like it existed in a completely different series. A year ago we were loudly singing the praises of Stranger Things' Eleven ( Millie Bobby Brown), but the pint-sized, breakout star of the show's first season has now become the '80s-set series' weakest link. ![]() ![]()
![]() ![]() The smaller moments that focus on the interactions of the three main Minions are the ones that work best. Those opening 20 minutes are proof of that. It would be easy to say that the Minions should just be doled out in small doses, but I still believe they could carry their own film if it were written properly. The little kids, who are obviously the film's target audience, aren't going to recognize them, and this isn't the kind of voicework that requires great emoting. Honestly though, I have to wonder why the filmmakers even bothered to hire such big names. Jennifer Saunders does a decent Queen Elizabeth, and Michael Keaton and Allison Janney turn up in small roles as the head of a family on a crime-spree. John Hamm fares a bit better as her groovy inventor husband. Scarlett Overkill ends up shrill and flat as a rather generic villain. A whole lot of sound and fury happens as a result, some of it amusing, but with a lack of heart or even much originality.Īlthough the cast features several recognizable voices, none of them bring much to their parts. By a fluke they end up working for Scarlett Overkill (Bullock), who has a plan to steal the Crown Jewels from the Tower of London, or rather she has a plan for the Minions to steal them for her. After a short detour in New York, they end up in Florida at Villain-con, an obvious spoof of Comic-con that fails to capitalize on the satirical possibilities this presents. In 1968, 3 of the Minions, Kevin, Stuart, and Bob, leave the remote Arctic cave where the Minions have been living, to find a new Master. It's when the story kicks off properly that it starts to feel a little lost. They latch onto a T-Rex, a caveman, Dracula, and Napoleon, each one of which they kill with kindness as they attempt to serve them. ![]() This is actually one of the most amusing portions of the film. Through each stage of their evolution they follow their herd instinct to serve the most evil master they can find. ![]() Over the first 20 minutes or so, we see them through history as they evolve through a fish stage and finally on land in the form we've become familiar with. The story follows the Minions from the dawn of time when they are single yellow celled creatures. Beyond the soundtrack, there's nothing included here specifically for the parents. The youngest children in the audience will no doubt love it and there are some funny moments that will appeal to audience members of all ages, but it's lacking the subtext for adults that all the truly classic animated films possess. Financially that's certainly correct as the movie opened to huge box office receipts its opening weekend and no doubt the merchandising is likewise raking in money. Given the little yellow pill-shaped creatures appeal, and the endless marketing opportunities they represent, a spin-off movie of their own must have seemed like a no-brainer. I enjoyed the two Despicable Me movies and found the Minions to be the funniest elements in them. ![]() ![]() ![]() Promising review: "This stuff works! I'd never had a wart in my life! The next morning there was a NOTICEABLE reduction in the blue and the glass looked clearer too. My ambition in life is NOT to be a full-time bathroom scrubber! I saw this stuff on a professional house cleaner's TikTok (sorry, don't remember which one) and thought 'what the heck, might as well give it a try.' Oh my goodness, the first day after my shower I sprayed this stuff all over and walked away. I've tried dozens and dozens of cleaners and scrubbed till my arms ached trying to get ahead of the blue and scumminess. The well water also causes the shower glass to film up quickly. Since my bathroom color scheme isn't on the blue spectrum, this is problematic. Something in my well water reacts with copper plumbing and turns my shower tiles blue. Thank you for providing me with such a helpful product." - Meghan I have experienced skin sensitivity in the past to products, but I had no issues with Burt’s Bees products. It left a layer that stayed cool for a few hours (at which time I reapplied it), it was a little tacky to the touch (not sticky or oily), and my skin did not experience the crocodile and subsequent peeling experience it had earlier in the season. To my absolute joy, this product relieved my discomfort. I applied this lotion the MINUTE I realized that I had experienced another exposure to the sun for too long a period. Two times in one summer I proved my inability to adult well. Of course this review would not be complete without me faulting myself a second time. The initial use was a day or two after the day of regret, but it eased the discomfort and moisturized my reddened skin, helping to soften the leather layer I had started to form. Midnight discomfort lead me to this product. I proceeded to spend a night wishing that I could safely freeze myself into an ice cube. Promising review: " I’m happy to say this product works! Over in the world of Sony, you’ll find smooth motion called “MotionFlow”. If you own a Samsung TV, you’ll find the same technology thrown under “Motion Plus”. Panasonic’s word for smooth motion isn’t a word, but rather the phrase “Intelligent Frame Creation”, and it can be switched off easily enough under the display settings. LG’s has a bit more marketing speak applied, and LG calls smooth motion “TruMotion”. Hisense’s take on smooth motion is found in the Picture Settings menu under “Motion-smoothing”. ![]() Some of them leave it under pre-built settings, and these might turn it on and off, but for the most part, you find you need to go into the settings screen under display to find what it actually is. What is smooth motion called on my TV?įinding your TV’s motion settings varies for every TV made, and that’s because every manufacturer calls it something different. Smooth motion technologies are therefore made mostly for sports, and while you can watch anything else with them, it may shift the look and feel of media such as television series, documentaries, and movies, simply because they were shot to a specific style and direction, while fast moving motion is something different altogether.įortunately, you should be able to turn it off, though you need to know what it’s called on your TV, first. It’s not meant for movies or TV shows, however. More commonly known as smooth motion or motion smoothing, this form of motion compensation looks at the frames being rendered on the TV and adds frames to the process, smoothing out camera pans to make everything a little easier on the eye.Īlso called “the soap opera effect”, it’s easy to understand why it gets this name: everything looks like it was shot with a cheap camera, and films that have been shot with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of gear can be cheapened simply by leaving this on. There’s something TVs have done for quite a while, and if you’ve bought a TV in the past few years or sat in front of one, there’s a good chance you’ve seen it do this and just not paid attention.ĭesigned to make entertainment appear smoother, motion smoothing has been in TVs for quite some time, but it’s made for one purpose, and leaving it on all the time is like committing a film-viewing sin. Just like the smoker and that's the only place I know of to acquire one.You can grill at any age and continue enjoying your favorite cuts of meat. I am not affiliated with academy or Old Country. But I like cooking like that because I don't have to re-light batches of charcoal every 1.5 hours or so. Now, keep in mind that the Over Under is a stick burner type of cooker, so you would have to start buying wood splits instead of wood chunks. So you can have cheaper materials and build process but still get a product that works much better than a big box smoker. The Over Under is also not amazing, I think it's just 1/8" steel, but the body is welded and not bolted together, and I believe the general style of the Over Under smoker lends itself to better temperature control over the whole cooking area. I just couldn't find a horizontal offset style one that had high enough build quality for a price that I considered reasonable. I was thinking about going for a higher quality horizontal offset smoker like a Horizon or a Lang but decided on a Old Country BBQ Pits Over Under smoker. I also knew I didn't want another ceramic egg because I wanted more cooking area for my main (only) smoker. I knew I didn't want another char-griller because that one lasted like 10 years and I was really familiar with the drawbacks of that style of cheap smoker by then. I moved and left my char-griller horizontal offset and brand new ceramic egg-style smoker in another state because I got a new job. ![]() Only issue I had was the paint peeled instantly on the firebox. may add gasket at some point but may just leave it too. doesn't seem bad enough to affect the cook for me.
